I and my girlfriend plan to make a cycling trip (600–700 km long). If i cycling alone or with my friend we will probbably choose aprx 1200 or 1300 km long route in north of the country.

So i will cycling with my girlfrient and she insist to visit Praha. So i plan to start somwhere between Česky Krumlov and Brno and than heading to Praha – later we will return to our car by bicycle – but not in the same direction. (so circular cycling tour). We will arrive to start destination from Austria. My girlfriend want to spent a day in swimming pool too – so i need some kind of thermal riviera somwhere beside the trip). I dont want to cycle with her in hilly road – so max day elevation is 500– 600 m. We will make a trip with my MTB (slick tyres) and 27' her trekking bike.

Does any one made simmilar trip in that direction – please advice me a direction to Praha from somewhere between Česky Krumlov and Brno.

    PS: Sorry for my english

Great web for planning cycling routes is mapy.cz. There are cycling routes for Czech Rep., you can see the profile of your route, you can select mtb / road bike for the planning.

Only 600m elevation ~80km ride per day will be quite difficult in some parts of Czech Republic. Central part of our country, between Cesky Krumlov and Brno is highland (Vysocina region means Highland region) is hilly. And valleys around Sázava and Vltava rivers too.

On the other hand, lowlands around river Labe north-west from Prague are really flat, no problem to ride more than 100km with elevation under 200m. :)

Tnx for your reply. So – from where do you prefer to start our jurney to Praha and wich direction we have to choose for return? As I said we plan to start from some place near the border with AUT. Wich direction is easiest and probbably sightseeing?

Ok – if all those direction are too tough – is it better choice to make a round trip from Prague to german border?

My recommendation is – find your trip around border, this is the most beatiful area (but – or because :) there are mountains). And then use train to visit Prague an for way back to car. If you start near Český Krumlov (i.e. Lipno – see Schwarzenberský kanál – it is flat although it is in the mountains), continue to Novohradské hory, visit Gmünd (there is spa = rest day :) then to Chlum u Třeboně, Nová Bystřice, Slavonice, there are many, many ways out of cars… Then use train to go to Prague, and from Prague back to Šumava too.

          So that route:

          https://en.mapy.cz/zakladni?…

Thank you for that. I am looking for that kind of answers, but…

So for me is your proposal – without any doubt i would do it without any problem. But my girlfriend will probbably kill me :) Do you have some simmilar proposal without hard hilly cycling? I didnt know that those area is so hilly. Now I decided to drive by car to Praha (or any other city in czech and that start easier circular trip – i prefer max 600 elevation gain in let say 70–80 km. So i am looking for that kind of trip for this year… Could you help me?

          • oddie

This is example of a trip around Schwarzenberský kanál: https://en.mapy.cz/s/2zL26

Note – real elevation gain is less than 1/2, because measurement tool cuts curves :)

Its just for inspiration, but – maybe will be better to do more one-day trips like this one – here you can leave car in Horní Planá, and use ferry boat on the way back.

Tell girlfriend, that this trip is prepared for 6y.o. children ;) well, we use train from Horní Planá to Nové údolí for one-day trip, or sleep near Nové údolí on two-days trip.

I changed my mind. Thank you for your suggestion. We will probbably make this circle:

              https://en.mapy.cz/zakladni?…

              Later we will also make:

              https://en.mapy.cz/turisticka?…

After that we will go to Praha by car. What do you think?

PS: There are a lot of peoples who are willing to help – i am really impressed!!!

                You are welcome :)

Looks good, just a few recommendation:

                • use smaller roads, like from Český Krumlov around river Vltava to Rožmberk nad Vltavou, Dolní Dvořiště and then to Malonty, not via E55 to Kaplice. And from Slavonice to Gmünd via Litschau etc.
                • could be interesting to visit Třeboň, or visit small but nice local ZOO here https://en.mapy.cz/s/2zZ2V
                • yes, will be better to visit Prague by car
                • if you have more free days for biking here, there are more nice and interesting areas in CR, i.e near Prague around Kokořín castle, visit castle and make trip around, we can recommend you some routes there too – see https://en.mapy.cz/s/2zZb2 castle and area around. Etc… Depends how many days you plan to spend here in CR :)

Thank you for that again. I will follow your instruction. As i said – this year i will make a cycle trip with my gf and i want that she remember this expirience as pleasure. If i have some additional questin i will put it here – if you remember something important thing about my trip please inform me.

If i travel alone i will made aprx 150–200 km per day without any problem.

                  Tnx again for your help.

Here you can find a short video from my cycling tour in Portugal few years ago (their highest peak)…

                  https://www.youtube.com/watch?…

Its in May, and there you can find a ski center. Ski center was opened in that time. :)

Thank you for all your recommendations. We made aprx 400 km round tour in Bohemia. Great expirience.

Now we are in Praha ( holešovice). We will be there till sunday – so everyday we have to back to our accomodation. Today we are going to the center of the town, maybe tommorow too.

The day after tommorow i plan some round trip (max 70 km). What do you suggest?

                  Tnx in advance!

Using car or directly from Holesovice? I will find something for you

                  • oddie

So, here you have small trip from Prague to Okoř castle, using ferry boat to Roztoky (you can start directly on the left river bank, but road is not so nice like on the right one, and ferry boat is fine). Thru Tiché údolí ( = Silent valley) to Únětice, here you can visit pub/brewery. You can also short the trip from Noutonice directly to Okoř, but valley under Okoř is nice, too. On the way back you will go thru really nice nature park Divoká Šárka down to the river and via Stromovka back to Holešovice.

There are some gravel parts of the way, but don't be affraid, it is OK for trekking bikes too. I ride it with kids with no-suspension 20" bikes ;) Enjoy! :)

      I check one route:

      https://en.mapy.cz/zakladni?…

Is it possible that this route has 2200 elevation gain? I check some routes in Austria, Portugal, Italy and Slovenia wich i made it in the past. And elevation gain was wrong in all of the routes (40–50 % more than real elevation gain)…

      • novas752

In Czech Republic, real elevation is 10–15% less than mapy.cz show, so this would be something like 1900–2000m. :)

Outside of Czech Rep. mapy.cz works with OSM elevation data so elevation mistake is diferent.

This is quite hilly area in some parts – you can see it from altitude profile. Several small highlands, deep river valleys, up, down, up, down…

Better to travel by train and do cycling just locally in the destinations.

Try to change en.mapy.cz mode to Tourist version (button in upper-left corner). You will see better map with tourist marks, cycle paths, contour lines, etc.

Is it possible that this route has 2200 elevation gain?

Maybe. The data are of course a bit noisy and also you probably don't want to count every 1-meter „hill“. Unfortunately mapy.cz don't have any filter to fix this.

      • MavasH

If you use Strava you can plan your routes there as well – you can implement tourist maps from mapy.cz by installing the chrome/firefox extension (made by one of bike-forum.cz user :) ) to see all tourist/cycle paths.

And for you imagination, here you can see where is our country flat a where is hilly :) (the web page is only in czech, the settings is shown on the picture below)

Just one question: Wich one is the best way to reserve an accomodation? I will reserve it day by day…

With booking.com, agoda.com or maybe is better way to ask a waitress? :)

Hey, if you'll have time and perhaps would consider a resting day, I recommend to go to Kutná Hora, especially the bone chapel aka The Ossuary: http://www.ossuary.eu/…rie-kostnice

This city used to be a mining town, silver. There's a guided tour in underground – catacombs, in the old silver mine. Would be better by car from Prague as mentioned if a resting day is at play. For the guided tour is better to make a reservation online.

From my apartement to kutna hora is 78 km. So if i want to make round trip i have to make around 150 km. Its too much for one day… i am looking for circle trip from here (holešovice) by bicycle…

Sure, I mean to make it by car as a resting day if it is in a consideration.

Here is a suggestion for a trip I have made several times already:

Get a TRAIN to Unhošt from Nádraží Holešovice, then follow: https://mapy.cz/s/2BIsn

The most enjoyable ride is from Unhost to Svatý Jan pod Skalou (a nice place, church…).

Great place for lunch in Lodenice is the Ve Století restaurant www.vestoleti.cz/ which you will pass just close by.

If you continue to follow the river, it is a very comfortable ride all the way back to the city (and you can alway cheat using the train).
